From my perspective as a programmer, X Windows is all the wonderfulness of a fully event driven architecture combined with a reasonably object-oriented structure, taken one step too far. Mix in a large bowl with a wide selection of "What were they thinking?!?!" design elements, and season with cross-platform problems.
